July 8, 2001: Our 1942 General Electric locomotive, our first diesel-electric, has officially been placed in service after about a year of mechanical and cosmetic work. The unit will be used for work-train service during construction of overhead for our track extension, as well as for moving cars which are inoperative or when the power is off.



July 7, 2001: The small gasoline Brookville locomotive which has served our museum for many years is finally receiving much-deserved cosmetic attention. Volunteers have been removing the various colors of faded paint. The rusted roof and body panels will be repaired, and the unit will be repainted, hopefully by the end of summer.



June, 2001: The traction motor for #172, which was removed last year for rebuilding, has been returned to us. A new commutator was fabricated, several new windings were made and installed, and all windings were baked and revarnished. Reinstallation of the motor is awaiting construction of a new, improved hydraulic pit-jack.



September 28, 2002: While woodworking volunteers have (so far) avoided the camera, there is lots of activity refinishing and rebuilding components of Johnstown 355 which will be needed for its contract restoration. Here, a volunteer fights with one last hidden screw holding a piece of electrical gear.



One cabinet contains slag, which is great for steel parts. The other has glass bead for gently cleaning brass, copper, and even nonmetallic parts.



April 13, 2002:

Our experienced cabinetmakers have begun repairs to portions of CA&E car #315. Work is progressing well.



Elsewhere in the shop, our new blast cabinet is being put to frequent use during rebuilding of four door engines for York #163. Parts end up looking brand new!



December 23, 2003:

Two days before Christmas, temperatures in the 50's inspired volunteers to start work on the roof of Johnstown 311. The car, built in 1922, was the first acquired by our museum, and its roof has been in need of work for some time. During the first half of 2004, damaged roof boards will be repaired, new canvas will be installed, and roofwalks and wiring will be replaced. Stay tuned for the progress!
